More information about writer and poet Gerard Reve
Reve was buried on April 15 2006 at the New Cemetery on Hoevestraat in Machelen-aan-de-Leie. Before the burial, a funeral service[9] took place in the parish church of Saint Michael Cornelius and Ghislenius.[10] During this, Pastor Gabriël Desmaele[11] delivered a homily. Reve had envisioned a special spot in a corner of the cemetery, but he was buried in the so-called 'honorary section' in the middle of the cemetery. In that section, a man had already been buried in 1982 who drowned while saving a child from drowning. In November 2006, the simple wooden cross that was placed immediately after the burial was replaced by a blue-pearl granite grave monument with the text: Here rests in peace Gerard Reve. On the lying stone, it says I love you.
