1. Smallestokstraat - Oostrozebeke

The Tieltsteenweg was long called Smallestokstraat, due to the very narrow bridge over the Mandel. A decent bridge was only built in 1893, when a direct road to Tielt was established.

Nevertheless, at the beginning of this street there was an important concentration of “Catholic institutions.” Since 1864, there was the first nursing home, and in 1905 the new “Sint-Augustinusgesticht” was put into use (in place of “red apartments” and parking). The Armbestuur, and later the C.O.O. (Commission for Public Assistance), both predecessors of the O.C.M.W., were located there. In 1964, the Residential Care Center de Rozenberg moved to its current location.

On the opposite side, the multipurpose hall "Tjuf," the former restaurant "Mistral," and the hall "Concordia" are still standing. In these spaces, until recently all owned by the church factory of the Sint-Amandus parish, various Catholic and founding activities (Sunday schools for boys and girls, library, cinema, etc.) took place for decades. Nowadays, hall "Tjuf" is the Local Service Center of Oostrozebeke, restaurant "Mistral" is used as a venue for the youth movement KLJ, and you can go to hall "Concordia" for various exhibitions and other art projects.

Baron de Bethune, mayor of Oostrozebeke around 1900, but also an architect and fervent supporter of Neo-Gothic, designed all these buildings.

Right before the bridge stands a beautiful Art Deco house on the right side, which was built by a flax dealer in the 1930s.
