One of those success stories is the return of the middle spotted woodpecker. At the end of the sixties, the first nests were found in the province of Luxembourg. It took until 2000 before the middle spotted woodpecker was spotted in Flanders (Meerdalwoud). In 2013, the woodpecker was first observed in Hertberg (the Merode). Now that this area is gradually evolving from a monotonous pine forest to a more mixed forest, the middle spotted woodpecker will also have every opportunity here. This lesser-known woodpecker species is between the large and small spotted woodpecker in terms of size. They resemble the great spotted woodpecker, but are distinguished by a distinctive red crown stripe on their head.
