E-biking in the Gents Houtland

The Gents Houtland is unjustifiably a lesser-known region of Flanders. This e-bike route lets you discover the Gents Houtland, the southern part of the Meetjesland. Due to the poor soil of Sandy Flanders, it was a poor area here for a long time. But you certainly won't say that now. You cycle along canals, forests and old farms.

Not to be missed along this route

• The Kraenepoel: This pond is the last of the dozens of field ponds with which the vast heathland from Aalter to Bruges was dotted. It originated from the 13th century when the inhabitants dug up fieldstones or cut peat. The remaining wells were used for fish farming.
• Poeke Castle: Poeke Castle is an impressive water castle that seems to have been plucked from the Loire region. The castle was used both as a backdrop in the prestigious BBC series 'Parade's End' and in the historical war series 'In Vlaamse Velden'.

What you need to know

The wealthy Ghent bourgeoisie once found the Houtland here the ideal environment to build monumental country houses. So expect a castle along your route every now and then.
