SAVES SCHOUSELBROEK Steendorp

departure from the parking lot in the Gelaagstraat (A layer was a place where the clay was worked into stones.) go down the street, straight on to the Scheldt where just before the stairs you can read a memorial stone of the migration of about 40 families by barge towards 'a better future' in Lot.

A year after its departure, in 1865, cholera was the cause of a considerable mortality in Steendorp.
On top of the stairs you are on the Scheldt dike (left bank) where it is nice to walk (cyclists and inline skates also find a good bottom) there is a rest bench every 100m with a beautiful view and a beautiful poem.
An iron gate puts an end to the dike trip and we go inland straight on until just before the Fonteinstraat (around the water treatment plant) where we sharply right onto the path that makes a left turn at a good distance from the water treatment plant. A variety of forest, heathland, gardens and meadow (and an orchard) about 500m. Then turn left until you reach St. Amelberga Chapel (Saint Amelberga of Temse ( - Temse 772).
After about a kilometer to the east, turn into the natural area of Schouselbroek. A narrow path between forest and garden (with a noisy dog) and a little further a somewhat muddy path (only about 50m) after which an enchanting environment leads you to the once largest and once most expensive fort in the country.
