Vloethemveld is a nature reserve of 330 hectares with a rich landscape history from the Middle Ages to the present. In the twentieth century, the site had a military purpose, with a munitions depot of the Belgian army after the First World War and a British prisoner-of-war camp with more than 100,000 prisoners after the Second World War. These locations can only be visited upon request and with a guide.
The surrounding forest makes a beautiful setting for a nature walk, with the added bonus of a lookout tower and an observation platform overlooking the large pond.
This GPS walk is a combination of various walking routes within Vloethemveld, predominantly the yellow route (sometimes opposite walking direction) with a detour here and there to show a bit more, such as the 'water hut' for spotting waterfowl and the 'Forbio forest', an experiment with different species of trees mixed together. For those who prefer less walking, there are still the Bospad (4.3 km), Oorlogspad (1.8 km), Vredespad (2.8 km), and Langs bos en hei (10 km).
Renovated parking at Diksmuidse Heirweg, unfortunately not accessible for campers (?!). Cross the street and start a walk with 90% unpaved paths. For the GPS setting, it might be best to mention house number 6 (Fire Brigade Training Center near the parking lot) because Diksmuidse Heirweg is very long and is cut in two by Snellegemsestraat.
