Nathebachtal

The Nathebachtal valley is located in the Dortmund district of Aplerbecker Mark in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is named after the Nathebach that flows through it.
The area, which covers about eight hectares, is a typical source stream valley with forest and unfertilized wet meadows. It begins at the heights of the Schwerter/Aplerbecker Forest at the border of the Dortmund districts of Berghofen and Aplerbecker Mark, around the source of the Nathebache, and stretches northwards to the dammed rain retention basin in Osterbruch. The water level in the brook is highly dependent on precipitation. At the edge of the area, there are some dry sheep pastures where rare and protected species grow. Otherwise, it hosts many species of amphibians, dragonflies, insects, and birds. The amphibian species breed in the numerous ponds in the Nathebachtal as well as in the ponds in the Aplerbecker Forest. In 2002, the Aplerbecker Waldstraße was closed to through traffic and an amphibian tunnel was built for them. Parts of the brook valley are described as worthy of protection in the biotope catalog of LANUV.
