Brunshausen Abbey

Brunshausen Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey in Brunshausen, now a district of Bad Gandersheim, in the state of Lower Saxony and the diocese of Hildesheim.

Brunshausen was chosen for the first time by the Ottonians as the seat of power, as it was at the centre of their rule and on the army route that linked Mainz to Fulda, Northeim and Hildesheim via the North Sea. The manor house, whose excavations have uncovered remains of the wall from around 840, probably had a small church that owned it during the first quarter of the ninth century. During the excavations, there is a piece of plaster with a runic inscription. The monastery was consecrated first to St. John and St. Stephen and then to Boniface of Mainz when he received relics.
