The Evangelical-Lutheran City Church of Our Beloved Ladies, also known as St. Mary's, is a three-nave hall church and a landmark of the city of Meiningen. The City Church is the most significant sacred building in Meiningen and serves as a parish church for the Protestant congregations of the region.
The construction of the double-towered, cityscape-defining St. Mary's Church began in the Ottonian period. As the oldest still existing building in the city, it unites several architectural styles due to over a thousand years of varied construction history. The City Church forms the center of the historic old town of Meiningen and is located on the south side of the market. It towers above the surrounding buildings, which consist of half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and neoclassical townhouses from the 19th century. Near the north side of the church nave is the "Heinrichsbrunnen" with the statue of Emperor Henry II. According to tradition, Henry II is said to have initiated the construction of the church during his stay in Meiningen in early January 1003, following his coronation as king during the homage journey.
