The La Hermida gorge is a set of narrow ravines of the Ándara massif that converge into the main one, formed by the course of the Deva River, which runs between large nearly vertical walls of limestone, some over 600 meters high. Its 22 kilometers in length make this gorge the longest in Spain. An area of 6,350 hectares is designated as a special protection zone for birds. During the 19th century, the gorge was frequented by travelers, explorers, mountaineers, climbers, and British hunters who used it to reach the Picos de Europa. For this reason, the gorge is described and even illustrated in engravings in many books of the time, such as in Highlands of Cantabria.
