The castle of Arcos de la Frontera is located in the highest part of the town of the same name.
The primitive military fortress was built by the Muslims in the 11th century and modified during the subsequent Christian occupation (14th and 15th centuries); the Torre del Secreto, the eastern walkway , the southern flanking towers , the great cistern in the parade ground and the battlements with a pyramidal finish date from this period.
In the War of Independence (1810-1812) it was used as barracks by Napoleonic troops .
It belonged to the Ponce de León family and the owners are currently of English descent.
The castle of Arcos de la Frontera stands out in height from the houses of the urban center that surrounds it. It has an irregular elongated and quadrilateral plan, it has three large towers , crenellated for much of its perimeter (except the north side), and its interior is divided around a large patio and a second, smaller patio.
The current access is made from the Plaza del Cabildo intersection under the arch where the Oratory of the Town Hall used to be. Above the simple entrance you can see the coat of arms of the Dukes of Arcos.
