Château Saint-Sixte

Château Saint-Sixte, located on the banks of the Nied river in Moselle, is one of the jewels of Lorraine?s heritage. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when the first fortified castle was erected by Lord Wirich de Valcourt. Although this medieval edifice was destroyed before 1536, an ambitious reconstruction took place between 1536 and 1546, giving rise to the castle we can admire today.

The castle is distinguished by its unique architecture: built mainly of local pink sandstone, it adopts an oval shape around a central courtyard and is surrounded by corner towers, some of which feature rare and original "crawling" windows. Its buildings reflect several phases of construction and development, with frameworks and structures dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Over the centuries, Château Saint-Sixte has evolved to adapt to the defensive requirements and aesthetic changes of the times, while retaining its charm and authenticity. Today, it is recognized not only for its historical interest, but also for its architectural value.
