The thirteenth-century Duart Castle, beautifully situated on the Sound of Mull to the east, was the seat of the leader of Maclean, until in 1692 they had to pass to the Campbells. The castle fell into decay completely. In 1910 Sir Fitzroy MacLean was able to buy the ruins and had to immediately begin the restoration. A visit is definitely worth it (but you have to pay!). You walk through the dining hall and state rooms, up to the roof where you can count on a phenomenal view. There you see how Duart Castle dominates three estuaries. So it is a very strategic location. In the dungeons were once the crew of a galleon of the Spanish Armada. The galleon was attacked in 1588 by the father of the clan, Donald MacLean. The husband of Lady Elizabeth MacLean was an avid Boy Scout. On the top floor of the castle is a small exhibition devoted to Chief Scout Baden-Powell and his scouting movement.
