Barchem

Barchem is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It has a population of 1807 (January 1, 2006). It is located right next to the Lochemse Berg. Barchem originally means 'Village to the Berg'There used to be a tram from Borculo to Lochem, which also ran through Barchem. Around 1940 this connection was discontinued. The station in Barchem was converted into 'Hotel Meilink'. Around 2000, Hotel Meilink was demolished and senior housing has now been built under the name Station Barchem. On the site where the 'Scholtenhof' residential area now stands, there used to be a cooperative. Barchem is located on the provincial road between Lochem and Ruurlo (Provincial road 312) and Borculo (Provincial road 821). It has a direct bus connection to Lochem and Borculo (line 56). The place is popular with tourists, and has a large number of campsites in the immediate vicinity. On June 2, 1999, this small town was hit by a whirlwind that caused a lot of damage.
