Beech Mountain

Beukenberg is an artificial forest located west of the city center of the Belgian city of Tongeren. The forest is situated on a Roman aqueduct and therefore has significant archaeological value. Today, Beukenberg is a green area with several walking paths.
The Roman aqueduct was an earthen embankment with a length of 6 km. This embankment served to supply water to the city. Although the Jeker river flowed alongside the city, this river could not be used for water supply. The Jeker lay in a valley and in a swampy area. These factors made it impossible to transport water to the higher situated city. For these reasons, it was decided to divert water from the Mombeek. Between the source of the Mombeek - near Widooie - and the city, there was a height difference of 5m. In the first kilometers of the aqueduct, the natural fall of the landscape could be utilized. However, in the last kilometers of the aqueduct, before connecting with the city, a large earthen embankment had to be constructed to bridge a small valley. In this last section of the aqueduct, the height differences are clearly noticeable. What makes this aqueduct especially unique is that the water is channeled over the watershed between the Maas and Scheldt basins. The Mombeek belongs to the drainage area of the Scheldt, while the center lies in the drainage area of the Maas.
