Peace Chapel

The chapel was built in 1955 to a design by sculptor Jac Kreijtkamp. That's thanks to Sister Reinilda. She was a district nurse in Dorst and Molenschot for many years. She was highly appreciated for her great commitment, especially during the difficult war years. As a religious, she saw it as her task to work on her faith. That service should be rewarded at her farewell, they thought in Dorst. But Sister Reinilda didn't want a gift for herself and came up with the idea of building a peace chapel. So it happened, a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary was placed in the chapel. The chapel was solemnly consecrated in 1955. Here, too, the chapel fell into disrepair in the sixties and was neatly refurbished in 1978. Names of Polish soldiers who died during the liberation of Dorst on 29 October 1944 are inscribed on the wall and are reminders of the Second World War. That is why the Peace Chapel also became the war memorial, where Remembrance Day takes place every year on the fourth of May. The chapel stands in a beautiful place, where many passers-by stop to look, rest, pray. The chapel is neatly maintained by a group of volunteers from Dorst. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the chapel, a solemn Eucharist was celebrated in St. Mark's, after which a procession was taken to the chapel to salute Mary, praying that her example may inspire service and peace.
