At the NW side of Kondias you will see 5 renovated old windmills. Windmills are an obvious source of energy on the island that is called "the windy one". But this spot is well chosen if you analyse the topography of the island and the prevailing winds. The prevailing wind is a NE-SW wind. You can also have a look at the orientation of the landing strip of the airport of Lemnos, or at the bushes which are shaped by the wind. These winds hit the mountain range west of Propouli-Krinida-Aghios Dimitrios-Kondias. This mountain range of about 200-300 m high is also NE-SW oriented and works as a guiding wall or sail, guiding the winds towards Kondias. If you take a more detailed look, you will see that the hills called Platia blocks the winds in their SW flow and guides it to these old windmills. These people from
Lemnos obviously did not only suffer from the wind but they understood them also very well to make good use of them.
