On 31 May 1930, King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth opened the canal works in Vroenhoven. The Albert Canal was dug right through the center of Montenaken (the former name of Vroenhoven). The church, the rectory, the schools and the town hall were then located on the very edge of the parish.
In 1935 they were faced with the choice: restore the old church or build a new one in a better location. Father Coune convinced everyone to build a new church, the cost of which was initially estimated at 450 000 francs. Architect Jongen van Zichen-Zussen-Bolder built the church for 680 276 francs.
The church was badly damaged in 1940 and restored in 1941. A thorough renovation in 2005 was concluded with an exhibition: "Kristus lived in Vroenhoven".
Inside the church, 16 murals were painted. They represent biblical scenes. Exceptionally, each painting depicts a piece of Vroenhoven.
