RTILLERY WOOD CEMETERY
Artillery Wood Cemetery was established by the Guards Division after the Battle of Pilkem Ridge at the end of July 1917, during which the division captured Artillery Wood to the east of the Ypres-Comines Canal from the Germans. The cemetery was located just next to the northern side of the wood. It remained a frontline cemetery until March 1918.
At the armistice, there were 141 graves. An expansion occurred through the reinterment of remains from evacuated smaller cemeteries and bodies found on the battlefield around Boezinge.
There are now 1,307 victims of the First World War buried here, including 506 unidentified and 12 casualties with a 'special memorial' "Known to be buried in this cemetery" or "Believed to be buried in this cemetery".
The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
