Plateau of Caestert

The Caestert Plateau is a plateau that lies partly in the Netherlands and partly in Belgium. It was created by wear and tear by the Meuse on the one hand and the Jeker on the other. The Dutch part is usually referred to as the Sint-Pietersberg.
The largest part is located in Belgium and that extends all the way to Visé. Everywhere in the plateau there has been a lot of digging for limestone extraction and therefore there are numerous quarries here.
Between the Belgian towns of Kanne and Ternaaien (Lanaye), the plateau was excavated no less than 60 meters deep during the construction of the Albert Canal. The rising marl walls attract a lot of attention from cyclists and walkers.
Nature is also an attraction. The Belgian part is designated as a Natura 2000 area because of the many different types of habitats, such as limestone grassland, juniper bush and the quarries.
These quarries provide a safe haven for more than ten species of protected bats.
