The Neurather See, sometimes also called Martinssee, is an open-cast mining lake northwest of the village of Neurath, which today belongs to Grevenbroich.
The lake was created from the residual hole of the Neurath-Nord lignite opencast mine. Here, in the "Neurath 3" mine field, formerly "Princess Victoria", lignite was mined from 1960 to 1985. The opencast mine was developed by Martinswerk GmbH for chemical and metallurgical production from Quadrath-Ichendorf, which is why the lake is also called Martinssee. The operation was managed on behalf of Martinswerk by a consortium led by Strabag Bau-AG. Shovel wheel excavators were used for mining in opencast mining, and the overburden was tipped via conveyor systems and stackers. The coal was transported by truck to the Martinswerk, where it was used to generate electricity and process steam for the production of metallurgical alumina.
