In hydraulic engineering, a denomination (also dike hole in the case of dikes) is a passage in a flood defence made by people. A denomination has a vertical masonry or concrete dike wall on both sides, usually containing one or two slots or grooves. At high tide, beams (bulkhead beams) are pushed into these trenches that close off the cut-off, making the dike water-retaining again. The bulkhead beams are often kept in a bulkhead house, a house made of wood or concrete on the top of the dike next to the denomination.
A work of art (a cast iron button) has been placed near the denomination of Baarlo to commemorate the collaboration in the creation of the Maaskade, after the high water of 1995.
