La comunità religiosa israelitica di Lipsia si costituì solo nel 1847, sebbene si possano rintracciare tracce di vita ebraica a Lipsia fin dal Medioevo. Solo dalla metà del XIX secolo, tuttavia, fu permesso agli ebrei di stabilirsi permanentemente a Lipsia.
Da quel momento in poi, si sviluppò una vita ebraica variegata a Lipsia. I nuovi arrivati si emanciparono sempre più come cittadini di Lipsia. Furono costruite sinagoghe, fondate scuole. In soli cento anni, la Kehillah di Lipsia divenne la sesta più grande in tutta Germania e la più grande in Sassonia, nel 1925 aveva circa 13.000 membri.
