According to Christian Stickx, the Templars played an important role in the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. The Flemish Templar Knights chose the Flemish municipalities and against the French king. However, the French Templars accompanied Philip the Fair, but reluctantly. Not illogical, since a few years later the French king would completely destroy this order. It was due to the information and influence of the Templars of Ypres that the French Templars ultimately did not enter the marshes of the Groeninghenkouter during the Battle of the Golden Spurs.
