This neoclassical church was built in the mid-19th century to replace a Romanesque church building. Notable is the tower topped by a lantern-shaped spire.
In 1747, the church was looted during the Battle of Lafelt between the French and the Austrians. The then pastor requested compensation from Louis XV, the King of France, who was staying in Alden Biesen at the time. With the money he received, he purchased a silver monstrance, which is still in the tabernacle today. The base of the monstrance features the French lily and the coat of arms of the French king.
During World War II, the church sustained heavy damage. In the repairs, the wooden lantern on the tower was replaced with a replica made of reinforced concrete.
The church has an impressive baroque pulpit that dates from the 18th century and is therefore older than the current church building. The pulpit is supported by a statue of Saint John.
