Lakes have long fascinated the hiker. Those looking for a landscape with an unspoiled character will find a suitable destination in Butgenbach.

Deep in the East Cantons, the call of nature is still audible; here the paths form the soul of the land. The north wind dispels the last wisps of mist. When the weather permits, the blue sky reflects in the clear waters of the lake. The path along the shores reveals nature in its more raw beauty. During the summer, the beaches found here and there invite a refreshing plunge.

A little further on, a narrow path leads you to the nature reserve of the Holzwarche. This is a rare example of a mowing meadow that can only develop from an altitude of 500 meters. Alpine plants such as mountain fennel and black bindweed thrive here.

After a short climb, you can enjoy a wide view over the lake. The Warche seems to resemble a Canadian river just before its mouth, especially in winter, when the water in the cove threatens to freeze. This walk along picturesque forests and the lake will delight many.
