Hildegard von Bingen owes her surname to her most fruitful years in the monastery she founded on the Rupertsberg near Bingen. Here she wrote, among other things, two famous visionary theological and two medical works and composed her music. She also conducted some of the most extensive correspondences of the Middle Ages, including with Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick I. From a very young age, she had visions, which she began to write down later in life. Throughout her life, she led two monasteries and is considered one of the greatest women of the German Middle Ages for her groundbreaking work as a naturalist, nutritionist and healer, poet, composer, mystic, and theological thinker. Pope Benedict XVI elevated her in 2012 to Church Doctor, an honorary title for great theological thinkers and inspirers. With this, Hildegard becomes the fourth female Church Doctor, alongside Teresa of Ávila, Catherine of Siena, and Thérèse of Lisieux. source: www.lucededia.nl
