The Martinus Nijhoff Bridge (1996) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Waal near Zaltbommel. This type of bridge is characterized by a road surface that is suspended from thick cables (the cables). The cables are attached to the pylons. In bridge construction, pylons are large steel or concrete towers near cable or cable-stayed bridges, to which the steel cables are attached, from which the bridge hangs. A pylon often has two legs on either side of the road surface (connected at the top and possibly also at other heights), sometimes only one in the middle or two on each side.
The bridge is the replacement of the old and too narrow Bommelse Bridge from 1933, which was demolished in April 2007. The bridge is named after the poet Martinus Nijhoff.
