Gildenhuis brewery Van Hemelrijck

Beschrijving

In 1738 the 'Hooghuys', also called the "Withuys", (now the Gildenhuis) was rented by Baron de Hemptinne, owner of the castle of Dworp. The rented property included "seket huys, stables ende camme met brouwketel, kuypen and all other utensiele. In 1755 Baron de Hemptine sold the brewery to Filip Bosquet and his wife Catharina Van Cotthem, who leased it to Philippe Van Hemelrijck. In 1769 the brewery, the distillery and the stables were purchased. Later, a large beer warehouse was built at Industriekaai 43 in Brussels. The lambic was brewed in the "Hooghuis" in Dworp and transported by beer truck to the warehouse in Brussels. In one of these transports, a carter fell under his beer cart one evening and crashed. But on July 1, 1914, a few weeks before the start of the First World War, he quit, virtually bankrupt. He left everything behind, even the horses in the pasture. During the First World War, the brewery with stables and house stood abandoned, exposed to looting and robbery. On September 17, 2016, Jacobs wanted to establish a cooperative dairy. Julien eventually sold the new beer warehouse, the house and part of the courtyard to the non-profit association. "Parochial Works of the Deanery Halle". In addition to an inn and a shop, a meeting room and a party shop were set up. The brewery, the malthouse and the stables opposite the presbytery were expropriated and demolished to widen the Vroenenbosstraat. The ground floor of the new beer warehouse was converted into a meeting room; The upper floor was converted into a theatre. The stage was above the inn space with the changing rooms behind it, along the street side. The west wing of the "Hooghuys" became an inn, the east wing a shop of the cooperative "Welvaert". Due to the emergence of large self-service shops after the last world war, the Welvaert store of Dworp was no longer profitable, and was closed in 1960. The "Hooghuys" was thoroughly renovated. The Winderickx brewery, as the main tenant of the building, founded a new inn.
