The Kalmthoutse Heide is a rare relic of the once vast European heathland. The area has a long history of protection and was already classified as a protected landscape in 1941. It is one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Flanders. It was founded in 1968 and is now more than 1,000 ha in size. It is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest of the Flemish Government. Characteristic of the Kalmthoutse Heide is the dune landscape with alternation of dry and wet heath, open sand, fens and forests. Its natural value is of European importance and the site is therefore part of the Natura 2000 network. Numerous typical and rare plant and animal species occur there. The nature reserve is part of the cross-border nature reserve Grenspark de Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide. Since its establishment in 2011, the various site managers and owners have been working together to protect the area as a whole. In consultation, solutions for desiccation, fragmentation and recreational pressure are being worked on. In addition to the great natural value, the Kalmthoutse Heide also has a very important social function. In our urbanized environment, the Kalmthoutse Heide is the favorite place of thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the natural beauty, the peace, the silence and the wide landscape.
This route takes you along scenic sandy paths through an open, wide landscape with unspoiled vistas. The route is passable and dry, but on some stretches with loose sand it is sometimes more difficult to walk.
