The Leopold Canal was constructed after Independence. The Netherlands refused to drain our polder water through its canals. So, an alternative had to be found quickly. By the time the Leopold Canal was dug, the feud with the Netherlands had already been resolved. Now you can walk and bike along this canal that runs through the Meetjesland Kreken area.

In the region of Assenede – Middelburg, one creek follows another. They were given names like Hollandersgat Creek and Haantjesgat Creek. The Boerekreek is undoubtedly the largest. During our Kreken cycling tour, we barely notice any difference in landscape while hopping across the borders. The creeks were formed by flooding and received an additional influx of water in the late 16th century due to breaches in the dikes. A technique that the Geuzen first applied in Ostend to keep the enemy at bay. The creeks in Waasland were also formed this way.
