Walk in Bacharach: Past vineyards, historical sites, and the Rhine

Starting point: Blücherstraße 250, Bacharach

Begin your walk at Blücherstraße 250, a quiet street in historic Bacharach. This is a great starting point to discover the surrounding vineyards and sights. From here, you will walk towards the wine hiking trail, one of the many paths through the region’s vineyards.

Wine hiking trail and donkey path

The wine hiking trail takes you through the hilly vineyards around Bacharach. As you ascend, you will soon have a breathtaking view of the Rhine and the town below. A popular side path is the donkey path, a steep trail that was once used by donkeys to transport wine uphill. The paths are well maintained and offer many photogenic spots to pause and enjoy the landscape.

Viewpoint Burg Stahleck and Castle Stahleck

Following the donkey path, you will soon reach the viewpoint Burg Stahleck. This is a viewpoint with a beautiful panoramic view over the Rhine Valley. The nearby Burg Stahleck is a medieval castle that now serves as a youth hostel, but still exudes the charm of a knight's castle. A visit to the castle itself is definitely worth it, with its sturdy towers and historic ambiance.

Werner Chapel and St. Peter's Church

From the castle, you will walk on to the Werner Chapel, a Gothic ruin that impressively rises above Bacharach. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Werner and is known for its beautiful architecture. A little further on is St. Peter's Church, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture. This church is one of the oldest buildings in Bacharach and is surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere.

After visiting the historic buildings, you will descend towards the Rhine and walk along the Rhine promenade "On the Banks of Poetry." Sun Tower and Left Rhine Jacob's Path

From the Rhine promenade, you will continue to the Sun Tower, an old fortification tower that was part of the medieval city wall.
