The Church of the Annunciation is one of the most interesting Renaissance buildings in Seville. It was the former church of the professors' house of the Society of Jesus, which was founded in 1565.
After the expulsion of the Society of Jesus in 1767, the monastery remained abandoned, where the University of Seville moved in 1771 . The church thus became the university's chapel until 1956, when it was transferred to the Royal Tobacco Factory. The site of the former monastery is now home to the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Seville.
It was designed by the Jesuit Bartolomé de Bustamante and built by Hernán Ruiz. It has a plan with a Latin cross and a beautiful facade decorated with a Virgin and child. Inside, the main altar is the work of Alonso Matías and the altarpieces of the Inmaculada de Juan Bautista el mozo and San Juan Bautista, the work of Juan Martínez Montañés.
This church is home to the Brotherhood of El Valle , considered one of the most classic of the Sevillian Holy Week.
