The theater was built in 1790 by some citizens who formed the Accademia dei Provvidi. In the 19th century, both operatic and prose performances were of great importance in the theatre. When interest in both the spa and theatrical performances waned, the theater was ceded to the municipality by the Accademia and underwent various works in 1934 to convert it into a cinema, including the construction of a projection booth in the stage above the real stage . It was closed after World War II. Thus began a long period of neglect, which was interrupted by the restoration undertaken in 1980 to a design by engineer Lisandro Gambogi from Lucca.
The theater, which has the typical shape of an Italian theater (an egg-shaped plan with twenty-nine boxes spread over two floors and a loggia), can be used as a venue for prose and opera performances, concerts and cultural gatherings.
