The church is mentioned since 979, but the current building dates from the 13th century, when it was probably extended by shifting the front facade to the west, which has a Romanesque facade with three broad arches emphasized by the two-tone marble . The plaque on the right column attests to the intervention of Maestro Buono di Bonaccolto in 1270. Its much earlier existence can also be inferred from the exposed wall on the north side, where the masonry of river pebbles in a row pattern shows an earlier layout. In 1579 the apse was demolished and replaced by a new sacristy.
The interior was expanded and renovated in the 17th century. It was abolished in 1784, but due to the stubbornness of the rector it fulfilled parish functions until 1805. The architectural structure of the building has remained intact and it is currently used as a warehouse, having been an art studio until the 1980s.
