This old colonial house belonged to the Count of Orizaba, whose wife had it covered with talavera tiles from Puebla, to show its status (as this was an expensive handmade material).
The "House of the Tiles" acquired a fairy-tale aspect, and became home of the Jockey Club, an gathering place for the elite under the Porfirio Díaz regime. At the end of the Mexican Revolution, it was acquired by "Sanborns" who remodeled the house tastefully and made it the basis of a nation-wide network of restaurants and pharmacies. Check out the art nouveau details and the mural painting "Omnisciencia" of José Clemente Orozco (1925) on the stairway to the toilets.
