An analysis of pollen grains from South America shows that the Chicxulub impact was partly responsible for the formation of the tropical rainforests as we know them today. Before the impact, the trees in the tropical forest were spaced far apart, allowing light to reach the forest floor. Then they grew much closer together, perhaps because of the extinction of large herbivores; more shade then came, and that allowed the growth of vegetables and legumes, which, thanks to the interaction with bacteria, took nitrogen from the air.
