Hoogmade is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland and is located east of Leiden and northwest of Alphen aan den Rijn. Hoogmade is located on the river Does. East of Hoogmade lies the Wijde Aa.
Hoogmade is first mentioned in written sources in the thirteenth century (1252) when it is donated to Dirk van Poelgeest. The second paragraph of the name -mademeans hayland (compare also Alkemade).
It was a high lordship from about 1255 to 1572. Mr van Hoogmade was entitled to impose severe sentences, including the death penalty. After that, Hoogmade was sold by Poelgeest's widow to the wealthy merchant Cornelis Sprongh for 60 thousand guilders due to insolvency, and it became a low fiefdom. In the French era, the lordly rights were abolished from 1795 and the lordships (and thus feudalism) were abolished. In the 19th century the village fell into disrepair, but in the 50s of the 20th century this changed and development started.
