The Broken Castle dates back to around 1300 and was once called Castle Gribben after the lordship of Grubben. This name recalls the grubben, the channels through which the water flowed to the Maas. In 1586 the castle became a "Broken Castle," referring to the ruined state of the castle. The notable height differences in the St. Jan's Key Forest, where the bench is located, were created by sand erosion.
