Ontdek alle voordelenThe route starts at the parking lot in the Schadijkse forests north of America (Naaldhoutweg) and runs clockwise, just under 53% of the route is unpaved. After completing the route, you have the option (only on Saturdays and Sundays) to eat and drink at the Brasserie Aan De Drift located across from the parking lot. This route is a variant of my gravel route “Nordlimburgian Gravel Route around Horst”. This route is 8 kilometers shorter than the original route and uses different gravel paths at various points than the original route (see the attached photo for the differences between the two routes).
General
The route is very diverse and leads over many unpaved paths (mainly gravel paths) in and around nature reserves such as the Schadijkse forests, along the Molens brook of Lottum, past the Groote Molenbeek in Horst, nature reserve 't Ham, Het Schuitwater (an old Meuse arm near Meerlo), 't Sohr, Swolgender Heide, Schuitwater (an old Meuse arm near Lottum), Reulsberg and the Heesberg. Additionally, you will pass through agricultural areas (east of Horst, south of Kronenberg, and south of America). You also pass the ruins of Horst Castle and the Borggraaf Castle (Lottum). The route runs alongside the Meuse twice.
Gravel Paths
Most gravel paths on this route are well passable. Some gravel paths are not allowed for traffic, while others are, and with intense use of these paths by agricultural or forestry traffic, the gravel paths may locally have slightly less good unpaved road surfaces. Furthermore, a single unpaved path (just west of Sevenum, namely the Heesbredeweg) may be less suitable for riding with narrow tires (such as: racing bike tires) during a dry period (more sand than gravel). You also cross the nature reserve 't Sohr twice, where you cross the bed of an old Meuse arm. In the past, the path was underwater after long rainy periods, but today excess water flows underneath the path. You also ride through the heathland in the Schadijkse forests (following the bike route "Staakbonenroute"), the entrance and exit of the heathland takes place via a folding gate.
