The Achterhoek & IJsselroute is a varied camping route of nearly 300 kilometers that combines the best of Salland, the Achterhoek, and the IJssel Valley: hedge landscapes, river panoramas, and historical Hanseatic cities. You weave between wooded banks and estates, follow the wide flow of the IJssel, and even touch the rolling Salland Ridge, one of the rare true “hilly areas” of the Netherlands.

Three places you should not miss. Deventer, one of the oldest Hanseatic cities in the country, surprises with its compact historic city center and the impressive Great or Lebuinus Church at the Great Churchyard. Further downstream beckons Hattem, small but atmospheric, with the distinctive Dijkpoort and picturesque streets near the IJssel. Inland, the Salland Ridge forms the natural highlight: rolling heath fields and ancient ridges provide sweeping views that are rarely found in the Netherlands.

Along the way, there are many places worth stopping: the Holten Canadian War Cemetery with its impressive war history, the forests around Holten, the nature and art landscape along the IJssel near Wijhe and Olst, the historic Hanseatic city Zwolle as a start or endpoint, and the rural tranquility of the villages in the Achterhoek with their characteristic farms and avenues.
