Der Traunstein ist ein 1691 m ü. A. hoher Berg im oberösterreichischen Teil des Salzkammergutes im Gemeindegebiet von Gmunden, am Ostufer des Traunsees. Er ist durch seine ins Alpenvorland vorgeschobenen Position und der steil abfallenden Felswände eine markante Landmarke und wird auch als Landeswarte oder „Wächter des Salzkammergutes“ bezeichnet. Er ist wegen seiner schönen Aussicht über den Traunsee, das Alpenvorland, das Tote Gebirge und das Höllengebirge ein beliebter Wanderberg. Der Traunstein ist durch mehrere Wanderwege und zwei Schutzhütten touristisch erschlossen. Seine Erstbesteigung erfolgte am 14. November 1506 durch Kaiser Maximilian I. Der Traunstein steht seit 1963 unter Naturschutz.
