Arelate ist der antike Name der südfranzösischen Stadt Arles in der einstigen römischen Provinz Gallia Narbonensis. Vor allem in der Spätantike war die Stadt von überregionaler Bedeutung. Bis heute ist die für römische Siedlungen typische, schachbrettartige Struktur der Stadt zu erkennen. Im Stadtzentrum stand das Forum. Es gab ein Theater, von dem noch ansehnliche Reste erhalten sind, und einen Circus. Von den antiken Bauten ist vor allem das Amphitheater sehr gut erhalten. Es gab zwei Aquädukte. Konstantin ließ große Thermen errichten, die teilweise heute noch erhalten sind. Vom Wohlstand der Stadt zeugen zahlreiche Mosaiken und Reliefsarkophage. Die Stadt lag an der Kreuzung zweier wichtiger Handelswege, die einen Teil des Wohlstandes erklären. Von Italien führte die Via Aurelia durch die Stadt und gleichzeitig lag sie an der Rhone.
