Eglise Saint Martin

The inside.

• The inside forms a Latin cross. The dimensions are impressive: 68,80 m. long (nave), 35 m. (transept) and 23 m. high (under the keystone).

• The nave is formed of arches on 3 stages. On the comer pillar, sculptures remembering the symbols of the four evangelists : human, ox, lion, eagle.

• The jube where the great organs are is elevated by an arch surmounted of a balustrade, with in the centre a relief of the king David playing harp and below musical angels.

• The pulpit in grey marble is the work of the sculptor Durieu from Tournai.

• The glass wall of the apse was made by the artist in stained glass windows Ladon from Gent It includes a rose window of 8 m. diameter and a large picture window with 3 ribs.

• The rose window is an hymn to the glory of God. lt is divided into 5 concentric zones and in the centre a bright red medallion representing the name of God in Hebrew. The 4 concentric zones are decorated with worshipper angels. The fifth one gives the 12 zodiacal signs. The pictures of the Blessed Virgin, St John the Baptist, the sun and the moon complete this beautiful scheme.

• The picture window with 3 ribs celebrates the Eucharist. In the centre, evocation of the miracles of the loaves and fishes, the sacrifice of the Calvary, the Last Supper and the meeting in Emmet& Left, scenes of the Old Testament : the sacrifices of Abel, Noah, Isaac and Melkisedek. Right, prophetical symbols of the Eucharist in the Old Testament : the Easter lamb, the Manna, the bronze snake and the Table of “proposition loaves”. The host, the monstrance and the pelican overlook the 3 ribs.

• The leaded glass window of the 4 side altars recall the vision of the Sacred Heart to St Marguerite-Marie, Our Lady and the Blessed Virgin given the rosary to St Dominique, scenes of St Martin’s and St Joseph’s life.
