This museum was inaugurated in 2009. It takes you on a journey through the history of oil in the world, Spain and Galicia with special emphasis on the regional product and production. Inside there are reproductions of tools used in the manufacture of oil, like a mill or a press, whose originals which are still in good condition can be seen in Tamaguelos and Feces. Next to the museum initiatives were carried out aimed at economic development likewise historical and cultural recovery of the area, with the trial plantation of 6 hectares and 1300 olive trees for their recovery and subsequent exploitation.
The history of oil in Galicia is closely linked to the olive production in this area. Chronologically it dates back to the Romans, who are thought to have introduced it in our territory, reaching great notoriety in Ourense and Lugo. The abrupt entry of the Catholic Monarchs who ordered the felling of the Galician olive trees to benefit other areas in the south, was a fatal blow to the industrial and trading system functioning since Roman times. The Galician olive tree managed to survive in isolated areas like Quiroga, Valdeorras, Monforte or Monterrei, looked after by small oil artisans who produce don a small scale supplying almost 80% of the Galician crop in the 17th century. Thus the presence of olive trees dropped until they almost disappeared 50 years ago.
