On May 5, 1945, Hotel de Wereld was chosen by General Charles Foulkes on behalf of the Allies for the negotiations with Colonel-General Johannes Blaskowitz about the surrender of the German occupier in the Netherlands. Foulkes would have chosen this place because of the location of Wageningen on the then front, the absence of civilians because of the evacuation and the symbolism of the name "The World". Prince Bernhard was present at the negotiations. A day later, the technical elaboration of the capitulation was signed in the auditorium of the former agricultural college (now Wageningen University), which is located right next to hotel de Wereld. The reason was that it rained that day and the roof of hotel de Wereld leaked. In the years that followed, however, the myth arose that the Germans in the Netherlands capitulated on 5 May 1945 in Hotel De Wereld, in the presence of Prince Bernhard.
