As early as 1286 there is mention of a castle in Amerongen. Over the years, the stone residential tower grew into a real castle. In the sixteenth century, the castle came into the hands of the Van Reede family, who eventually remained owners for more than 300 years. As is so often the case, this castle could not escape destruction and destruction. The invasion of the French troops in the disaster year of 1672 led to the complete destruction of the castle. Godard Adriaan van Reede and his wife Margaretha Turnor rebuilt the house in the Dutch classicist style that it still has today. At the end of the nineteenth century, the castle passed to the Van Aldenburg Bentinck family. After fleeing at the end of the First World War, the German Emperor Wilhelm II stayed at Amerongen Castle for a year and a half and signed his abdication there. In May 1920 he moved to Huis Doorn. In 1977, the castle was transferred to the Amerongen Castle Foundation, which takes care of its preservation and opens the house and garden to the public. On the website kasteelamerongen.nl you can find out when the castle can be visited, with or without a guided tour.
