Did you know that an exploding rockfall took place here in Yosemite, on 10 July 1996. The exploding rockfall produced a shock wave that snapped 1000 trees up to half a kilomtre away. The rock fell from Glacier Point and plummeted 665 metres. Previously it was thought that these type of "extremely energetic rockfalls" were rare. A study published by Fabio De Blasio in the Journal of Geophysical Research in 2018 showed that there were at least 21 other occasions like this in the last two decades, mostly in the European Alps and the Dolomites. To have such a blasting falling rocks, you need a block of about 10,000 cubic metres of rock falling several hundred metres The imact is so viloent that the rocks are smahes into powder.
