La Bibliothèque nationale de Finlande est la plus ancienne et la plus grande bibliothèque scientifique de Finlande. Administrativement elle fait partie de l'Université d'Helsinki. La bibliothèque est répartie dans plusieurs espaces. Le bâtiment principal est conçu en 1836 par Carl Ludvig Engel et sa construction se termine en 1840. Le bâtiment annexe nommé Rotunda a été conçu par Gustaf Nyström et construit entre 1902 et 1906. Dans les années 1950 on aménage un espace souterrain pour les collections à proximité des bâtiments principaux, cette excavation sera agrandie par la suite de façon très significative pour former un bunker souterrain de plus de 57 000 m3 creusé dans la roche à 18 m sous le bâtiment de la bibliothèque,. En 1998 la bibliothèque est agrandie par l'ajout du bâtiment Fabiania dont les différentes parties ont été construites par Jean Wiik et Gustaf Nyström entre 1844 et 1895. Fabiania est relié aux autres bâtiments par un tunnel souterrain.
