Cette ancienne abbaye fondée au IXe siècle se trouve dans une vallée sans issue au pied de parois abruptes de calcaire blanc. Cest de là que labbé Bernon partit au Xe siècle pour fonder la célèbre abbaye de Cluny. Grâce à Frédéric Barberousse, lempereur germanique qui était marié à lhéritière du comté de Bourgogne, labbaye de Baume réussit à acquérir son indépendance au XIIe siècle.
